- Understanding Addition And Subtraction
This unit covers ways to add and subtract, making fact families, understanding the equal sign, and properties of addition and subtraction. Students who have mastered basic number skills may progress quickly through the lessons covering ways to add and subtract and making fact families. These students may be ready to cover lessons on place value of numbers to 20. Lessons involving number bonds are important to cover because students will be using number bonds to add and subtract two- and three-digit numbers in future lessons through upper elementary grades.
- Numbers To 20
This unit covers place value of numbers to 20, comparing numbers within 20, making patterns and ordering numbers within 20. These lessons review and extend counting numbers from 11 to 20 by emphasizing place value and structure of “ten and some more.” Students will learn add and subtract within 20 without regrouping and compare numbers within 20 using comparison language: “greater or more than,” “less or fewer than,” and “the same as.”
- Addition And Subtraction Within 20
This unit covers topics of relating counting to addition and subtraction, adding within 20, subtracting within 20, addition and subtraction word problems, and adding three numbers. This unit covers the main strategy taught in Singapore Math 1a, namely, making a 10. Students will learn to decompose numbers using number bonds, make ten and then add to a ten. Making 10 is a foundational skill that supports mathematical concepts of place value, standard algorithm and algebraic thinking.
- Numbers To 40
This unit marks beginning of Singapore Math 1b and it covers topics of counting to 40, place value of numbers to 40, and comparing and ordering numbers within 40. Learning will be focused on counting, comparing, and the structures of numbers to 40. Students will learn how to count tens, i.e. 2 tens make 20, 3 tens make 30, and 4 tens make 40. Students will be able to model numbers in different ways using number bonds, words, and place value charts.
- Addition And Subtraction To 40
This unit covers addition without regrouping to 40, addition with regrouping to 40, subtraction without regrouping to 40, and word problems. Students will learn strategies for addition and subtraction within 40. These strategies are built on the previously learned strategies in Singapore Math 1a of addition to 20 and subtraction to 20. Students will learn to add and subtract one-digit numbers from two-digit numbers within 40.
- Numbers To 120
This unit covers place value of numbers to 100, place value of numbers to 120, comparing numbers within 100. In this unit students will use and extend their prior knowledge of the strategies they learned in the units on numbers to 40. Students will learn counting, comparing, and understanding place value of numbers to 100 and 120 by emphasizing tens and ones. Students will be able to model numbers in different ways using number bonds and place value charts, compose and decompose two-digit numbers, and recognize patterns.
- Addition And Subtraction To 100
This unit covers adding without regrouping to 100 and 120, adding with regrouping to 10, subtracting multiples of 10, mentally adding and subtracting 10. Students will learn strategies for addition and subtraction within 100 and 120. These strategies are built on the previously learned strategies of the first unit in Singapore Math 1b - addition and subtraction to 40. Students will learn to add and subtract one-digit numbers from two-digit numbers within 100 and 120.
- Length
This unit covers comparing and ordering length and finding lengths in units. Students will learn to estimate length, use comparison vocabulary to describe an object, move toward mastering measurement of length, weight, volume, and capacity. Students will solve computation and word problems.
- Time
This unit covers telling and writing time. Student will review and extend their knowledge to identify day and night, tell time to the hour on analog and digital clocks to the half hour and five minutes. The word “about” will be used to identify time.
- Representing And Interpreting Data
This unit covers picture graphs and tally charts. Students will learn to read and interpret picture graphs and compare numbers with subtraction.
- Reasoning With Shapes
This unit covers halves, fourths, quarters, composite shapes, and making patterns with shapes. Students will learn to identify, describe and classify shapes on the 3D figures based on the number of sides and types of angles. Students will identify attributes of shapes and patterns based on shapes being used in the 3D figures.
